Food Stamp Challenge Recipes: Burger/Sandwich Buns

| September 1, 2013 | 0 Comments

We adapted this recipe from one we found on Food.com  (thanks, Engineer in the Kitchen!) and it’s a real keeper.

1 cup water
1 egg
2 cups organic unbleached white flour
1 cup organic whole wheat flour
3/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup sugar
3 teaspoons yeast

Directions:

Toss all ingredients in bread pan, and start it up on Dough setting.  While it’s doing its thing, take a cookie sheet up and either grease it lightly or lay a piece of parchment paper on it.

When the dough’s done, turn out the doughball onto a floured countertop. Gently roll and shape the dough into a 12-inch rope.

With a sharp knife, divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each piece into a ball.

Flatten them to about 1/2 inch thick and put them on the prepared cookie sheet.  Cover them with a damp towel and let them rise for 15-30 minutes until they’re almost doubled. With a very sharp or serrated knife, slash the tops of the rolls in an “X” to help them bake up pretty.

Preheat your oven to 400°F.  Bake the rolls 10 to 12 minutes or until they’re golden brown.  Remove, cool, slice, enjoy

These keep well in a plastic bag or tupperware in the fridge for a few days or in the freezer for 3 to 4 weeks.
