Food Stamp Challenge Recipes: Almost Whole Wheat Bread (a la bread machine)

| September 1, 2013 | 2 Comments

With the bread machine we received for free from Freecycle.org, we make this bread at least once a week.  It’s far better and far cheaper than any organic bread you can get from the store (loaves often run $4.00 each or even more).

1-1/8 cup lukewarm water
1 teaspoon sea salt
1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup local honey
2 cups organic whole wheat flour
1 cup organic unbleached white flour
1/4 cup chopped organic walnuts
1-1/2 teaspoons yeast

Throw all of the ingredients in the machine in this order, and let ‘er rip.  Do something nice while it’s baking, like getting something else together (like our hummus), taking a walk, or playing with the kids/dogs/friends.

That recipe looks really good! I will have to try it out. I’m doing a project where I’m making 50 different loaves of bread with my bread machine, and documenting them on my blog:

I’ll let you know when I try it!
